Dr. Mahsa Saleki of SAS-Aesthetics is an experienced cosmetic surgeon and physician specializing in eye and nose reshaping and facelifts.

She revealed some exercise-related habits that can derail your skin care regimen with The US Sun.

SKIPPING THE SPF

It started with great anti-aging advice that almost every expert can attest to.

Dr. Saleki said not to skip sunscreen and to wear it daily.

“Exercising outdoors without sunscreen can accelerate skin aging,” he explained.

The sun’s UV rays break down collagen and elastin.

This can lead to premature aging, including fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin.

“It can also lead to hyperpigmentation, giving the skin a dull and aged look,” she added.

DELAY CLEANUP

Not cleansing your skin after a workout can also have several negative effects, especially if you’ve been sweating.

“Sweat, dirt and bacteria can build up on the skin’s surface during exercise and, if not cleaned, can clog pores,” he said.

This can lead to more acne as clogged pores become inflamed and infected.

Dr. Saleki also said to watch out for over-exfoliation.

“Excessive exfoliation can strip the skin of its natural oils and disrupt its moisture barrier,” she explained.

While it’s good in moderation, overdoing it can lead to dryness, irritation and increased sensitivity, which can make skin look dull and aged.

MAKEUP MERRORS

Wearing makeup while working out can have negative effects on your skin, she added.

“As you exercise and sweat, your makeup can mix with the sweat and oil, clogging your pores,” she said.

It can lead to breakouts because trapped debris and bacteria can cause inflammation and acne.

“Makeup can create a barrier on the skin, preventing the proper evaporation of sweat,” she added.

This traps bacteria and toxins on the skin’s surface, which could lead to more skin problems.

In general, she advised not wearing makeup during makeup so you can “allow your skin to breathe.”

Dermatologist-approved anti-aging tips

Dermatologist Dr. Brendan Camp shared his dermatologist-approved tips with The US Sun.

  • Stop using tanning beds.
  • Don’t use sunscreen to contour your face.
  • Use driving gloves to protect your hands from the sun. He likes the Coolibar Gannett UPF 50+ UV Gloves, $15.99 to $39.
  • Exercise, eat a healthy diet and get enough sleep.
  • Do not drink excessively or smoke.

SATURATE THE SKIN

Water plays an important role in maintaining hydration, elasticity and overall skin health.

“One of the key functions of water is to remove toxins from the body,” said Dr. Saleki said.

When you are properly hydrated, your body can eliminate waste and toxins through urine and sweat much better.

However, when you don’t drink enough water, these toxins can build up in your body, causing skin problems like acne, inflammation, and dullness.

“When you’re dehydrated, your skin can look dull, dry and less radiant,” explained the medical professional.
